In May of 2024 I began a journey across Ireland with my friend and fellow history buff, Kevin Roberts, in a week long dash from Dublin to Kilarney; all to answer the question of:
What is the Spirit of Ireland?
This journey was all filmed on-the-go with a camper-van, camera mount, and a couple of microphones and a lots of pints of Guinness. We were also joined by several guest along the way to assist us in breaking down Ireland’s complex history and culture that make up this tiny island full of mystery and magic. In the videos below you will see the series of videos filmed over the duration of our trip all leading to the climatic ending at the Bealtine festival at the Hill of Uisneach, the historic center of Ireland.
Day One: History
Our adventure began with an exploration of Ireland's rich history. We visited ancient sites, delved into myths and legends, and discussed pivotal events that have shaped the nation. All ending with a descent into a cave rumored to be an entrance into the Celtic Underworld.
Day Two: Language
Immersing ourselves in the Irish language, we connected with native speakers who shared their experiences and the significance of preserving Gaelic. Through conversations and lessons, we appreciated the language's resilience and its role in contemporary Irish identity.
Day Three: “Celtic”
Kevin and reached the furthest extent of our trip in Killarney, where we took a break to discuss the Celtic identity and whether or not “celtic” is a good word to discuss the diaspora of the Irish spirit.
Day Four: Shamanism
In the middle of our journey we met with Conchobhar in the east of Ireland to discuss the role contemporary shamanism may play in the understanding of Ireland’s past.
Day Five: Dublin
All roads lead back to Dublin, and it was no different for us as we took a break before leaving for Uisneach. We explore two of Dublin’s historical museums and discuss our findings over a pint of the good stuff.
Day Six: Uisneach
Our penultimate day led us to the Hill of Uisneach, considered the historic center of Ireland. Here, we participated in the Bealtaine festival, witnessing ancient rites and communal celebrations that highlight Ireland's enduring connection to its roots.
Day Seven: Spirit of Ireland
This final reflection encapsulated the essence of what makes Ireland profoundly unique and enchanting. We are also joined by a good friend Caoimhe who shares her perspective as an Irish woman now living in Scotland.
